BSc optometry is a bachelor’s degree in the field of optometry. The coursework of this degree is more technical than a diploma in Optometry. It is a four-year degree program that prepares students for a career in the field of optometry. In addition to the technical coursework, students in this program must take general education courses such as maths, and science. To be eligible for admission to this program, students must have completed their plus two in the science stream, Students are introduced to the practice of optometry through courses in contact lenses, visual perception, ocular disease, ocular pharmacology, ocular pathology, ocular pharmacology, and ocular trauma. In addition to their coursework, students complete an internship at an optometric practice.

Diploma in optometry course in Kerala

A diploma in Optometry is a two-year program. As a future optometrist, you will spend your days diagnosing and treating vision problems. You will need to be able to identify and diagnose vision problems and ocular diseases, perform eye exams, prescribe and fit eyeglasses and contact lenses, and manage low vision. The courses you take in optometry school will prepare you for these tasks. This is how it makes different from a degree and diploma course.  A degree gives you knowledge but a diploma can make you skilled to practise in a real-world environment. You will study the science of vision, the anatomy of the eye, the physiology of the eye, the pathology of the eye, the medical and surgical management of eye diseases, pharmacology, optics, and optical instruments. You will also study the business aspects of optometry such as billing and coding, medical ethics, and patient care. Your optometry college will also provide clinical training so that you can develop the skills needed to work in a clinical setting.

Bachelor of Science in Optometry is a four-year degree. The degree program is offered in a full-time format and is designed to prepare graduates for a professional career in optometry. 

A diploma in optometry course in Kerala is a two-year program that we have undertaken to develop the students with practical experience and practices and make the students capable to work in any of the health centers or clinics. Both the curriculum is designed to provide students with the knowledge and skills necessary to enter the profession and to provide the foundation for lifelong learning. Successful completion of the program prepares graduates to take the licensure examination for optometry. The program does not include training in clinical optometry as in the diploma program.

What are the topics covered in both courses?

The semester-wise BSc.Optometry subjects aim to impart knowledge of the varied ways to cure and heal the eyes and optics. Core and electives to form the four-year courses included in the curriculum are more flexible. BSc.Optometry subjects list are as follows:

  • Orthoptics
  • Vision Theory
  • Dispensing Optics
  • Clinical Optometry

Taking a Diploma in Optometry course, the syllabus includes eye and its related structures, as well as vision, visual systems & vision information processing in humans. Optometrists are the primary health care providers who are responsible for the Diagnosis, management, and treatment of Eye Diseases, Refractive disorders.

The course applicants will be familiar with the inspection and analysis of numerous refractive conditions and oversee Optical guides, such as Optical Glasses, Contact lenses, and other Remedial guides.

  • Students can specialise in the field of Contact lenses, Orthotics, Low Vision Aids, Sports Vision, Paediatric Optometry, Behavioural Optometry, etc. by practising. What are the career opportunities after the course?

After completing any of the courses, one can become and practise an Optometrist. they will assist Ophthalmologists in government and private hospitals. they will also find employment in optical showrooms and lens manufacturing companies. they need the option of pursuing private practice. Optometry doesn’t demand long hours of work and is not a stressful job. they will teach optometry after completing post-graduation. 

Their duties and responsibilities include: 

  • Detecting vision issues by conducting eye tests
  • Assist in eye screening in schools, colleges, and camps
  • Provide optometric counselling 
  • Fit contact lenses 
  • Prescribe eyeglasses 
  • Offer post-operative care to patients.
  • Assist in minor eye surgeries

With the optometry degree, and even with a  diploma in optometry, you will be able to work in several different areas. You can work in the health care field, research, and education. Your expertise will be in eye care and you will be able to help people with eye problems. You will be able to provide vision exams, diagnoses, and treatments. What are the higher education possibilities after learning each course?

Students who completed a diploma in optometry cannot study MSc optometry directly after the course if they wish to go for higher education. But they are eligible to work.

A student who completed BSc optometry can go to work or go for higher education in the field by taking MSc Optometry and further studies. One can go for research activities for deeper studies.
People who are interested in getting a higher education after learning optometry should consider going to a graduate college of optometry.
